Formula 1 cars will continue to evolve over time with regulation changes; this is inevitable. However, this years crop of Formula 1 cars aren't particularly pretty due to a ignorantly worded regulation. However, the aesthetics are undoubtably subjective; which brings us to the question: what is the most beautiful Formula 1 chassis ever raced?
And when I say 'most beautiful', I don't mean how fast or successful it was.

Ferrari 312B because the Lotus 49 is too mainstream. It also happens to have the best exhaust note (0:47 seconds in)

This:
Not because it's the best car, or the best looking car. But it is the first F1 car I actively remember. I remember me and my mom visiting a colleague of her on a sunday and me as a little boy and the husband of that colleague watching an f1 race.
I remember him talking about the snake livery (while we sat on the bed in the bedroom, since we were banned from the living room to watch it) and I remember really enjoying F1.
Since then i've been hooked.
So yeah, just plain personal reasoning.

I'm not sure if I can pick only one, but here are some of my favorite:
Lotus 49:
Mercedes Benz W196 Streamliner:
Alfa Romeo Alfetta 159:
Ferrari 312:
And Finally, and I'm not sure if it counts, the Delehaye 135:

Lotus 79.
Honda RA272
![]() 02/06/2014 at 16:39 |

Here is my top 3:
-McLaren MP4-20. Superfast and that nose is wonderful.
Looks even cooler in Chrome:
Mclaren MP4-23, because it is so complex in shape. Look at all the details. I have seen it live once in the Mercedes Museum, and it was worth looking at for one hour.
And the Honda RA272. Simple elegance. Also an incredible engine note.

Classic.
Bonus. A modern car with a classic livery design.

Step 1: look at any of the cars from the 1967 German GP (Photos by my pop)
Step 2: choose any of them (my vote goes to the Gurney Eagle, but the Ferrari, Honda, or even the Brabham would do compared to any F1 car since)

That's not even the most beautiful McLaren, let alone most beautiful F1 car.
The following is submitted as evidence, if it pleases the court:

Okay, my Canadian is showing, but the Williams FW19. F1 was still relatively new to me, and I fell in love with the Williams' cars of the mid 90's. The gold & red trim that flowed around the body, the blue nose which I thought made it look like a shark, and on a personal level, a Canadian drove it to WC.

I'm Canadian too, and love that car! had a 1/24 model of it back when i was a young lad. The whole JV thing, definitely a factor.

Of all the recent F1 cars, I'm partial to the early 2000's cars. The Ferrari F2000 is less cluttered with winglets and the traditional red is more promenant than the later Vodafone and Santander sponsored machines.

A lot of a racing car's appeal is in the memories it stirs. my picks;
modern.
Classic. 1991 is classic now right?

If they count, any of the Silver Aeros from pre-F1 and very early Grand Prix

Having worked with the original Indy car, as well as several other non-Formula 1 Gurney eagles, including Tony Adamowicz' 1969 formula 500 championship winning car, I have to say that the Gurney eagles will forever be my favorite open-wheel race cars. These things are just gorgeous and amazing works of craftsmanship.

Clearly the Lotus 88. Especially in the chrome Essex livery. So advanced it was banned before it was allowed to compete. Colin Chapman's masterpiece...

That depends. I think all cars of the 80s era look out of proportion. While the MP4-4 is the most beautiful car of that era, the era can't compare to the beauty of early 50s/60s cars or the 2004-2008 period.

![]() 02/07/2014 at 09:12 |

You can't deny that the chrome/red Vodafone livery was on some of the best looking F1 cars of the era. It is a classic by now.
F.e., Many people call the MP4-27 one of the best looking F1 cars.
![]() 02/07/2014 at 09:28 |

Ferrari made such pretty F1 cars in the late 80's

Disagree, only biased jaded Mclaren fans think so, you know, the ones who STILL can't get over their Alonso hatred, troll many a tentenths thread and turn up to every car show with their bellies sticking out from under their obnoxious rocket red t-shirt.
The MP4-27 is proof that you shouldn't allow your airbrush/paint guy to design your livery, it doesn't even fit the damn car properly and smacks of corporate blandness, if I wanted something to look like that I'd simply change my fucking credit card.
![]() 02/07/2014 at 10:06 |

I am not a McLaren fan. I am a Mercedes guy.
Alonso? That's in the past. He still behaved like a gigantic dick back then. And I don't know about McLaren fans on car shows, frankly I have never seen any.
Just for interest, what livery of the past years, let's say from 2010 to 2013, was your favourite?

None of then, they all look like credit cards. The Brawn looked cool but that was 2009.
Ferrari = Do something new you bori... oh right, you're too busy subliminally selling cigs.
McLaren = Proof that you should never use your paint guy as a graphic designer
Mercedes = Instead of using the kickass Petronas livery, they do some ugly airbrush crap.
Red Bull = This livery would be cool... if I didn't see it in every freaking single seater series!
Sauber = Wait? That's a livery?
Lotus = Proof nostalgia sells, but they need a new twist on things.
Marussia = Ugly
Caterham = Uglier
Toro Rosso = How to have a cool mural on the side of your can and ruin it by patchwork-quilting out of place sponsors everywhere.

Absolutely adore the Arrows A1 & especially A2... Was lucky enough to see the A1 in person, even going flat out at a motorsport festival in Adelaide a week ago. Brabham BT44 probably has to go down as THE favourite for me. Fair few Brabham cars would be on this list, though.
